Player Experience

In our players' own words

From picking up a racket for the first time in decades to juniors finding their feet on court — here's what coming to Beyond Badminton Chorley has meant to some of our players.

A return to the court

"Stepping onto the court after 25+ years was daunting"

Stepping onto the badminton court after 25+ years was daunting. At 48, a mum of three and acutely aware of my fitness levels (or lack thereof), the nerves were intense. Would my body remember? Would I make a fool of myself? Would this new group – I knew no-one in advance, had literally seen a post on FB about badminton here in Chorley – laugh at me?

From the moment I arrived, my anxieties began to dissipate. The group was incredibly welcoming and positive, making my return so much easier than I'd anticipated. They were so very friendly right from the start – immediately helpful, offering tips and encouragement without judgment. It quickly became clear that their focus was on enjoyment and support, not on my rusty skills or my quarter-century+ hiatus.

Their genuine warmth and constructive advice have been instrumental in rebuilding my confidence. Each session, I feel a little more comfortable, a little less self-conscious, and a lot more like I belong back on the court.

I've started watching short videos about serving technique, footwork, net play… I want to be better for myself, but also, as a representative of this incredibly kind, inclusive group of fabulous badminton players. I can't recommend it enough.

It's a testament to Beyond Badminton's supportive nature that a daunting comeback has transformed into a truly enjoyable and positive experience. My initial fear has been replaced by gratitude for such a fantastic group of people who've made this return not just possible, but genuinely fun. I play every Tuesday night now for the full 2 hours.

A family's experience

A mum and daughter, in their own words

My daughter has really loved coming to the badminton coaching sessions, the coaches are so welcoming and get everyone involved, whatever their ability. She has built her confidence & skills, found a sport that she really enjoys doing and met new friends. It's great to see such a mix of young people enjoying sport together.

Parent · Junior Coaching

I really like coming to play games against different people and learning how to get better at badminton. I enjoy doing the team runaround at the end, trying to keep the shuttle up. It's great meeting new friends and socialising.
